If you want to reap benefits of your weakness, then first acknowledge it.
“When you are good at something then never do it for free”
The quote was delivered by the Joker (Heath Ledger) in famous Batman movie. Unfortunately a huge segment of India has a forced monopoly on one section of services which is related to sanitation and leather or meat. They are almost forced to do it for free because of which neither they able to perform their job well nor they can control disgusting discrimination in the society. Where everyone else sees it as a discrimination issue, I see it as a business opportunity, because there is a service in market which no wants to do but on the other side there is highly unskilled labor which don’t know how to make most out of it.
For example, compare a meat shop run by locals in city area and a meat section in supermarkets. I have my apprehensions to visit these local shops because they are unhygienic, stinking and last but not the least, people, who are not well dressed and not polite enough to engage a customer correctly. They typically remind me old Hindi movie villains that used to fill with lots of disgusting stuff and acts. Now, probably I don’t need to remind you an experience of supermarket meat section. You are still buying meat but in a very elegant way with delightful customer experience. I don’t remember customer not shaking hands with owner just because he is in a flash trade.
So, my conclusion ‘people don’t hate people they hate what they see, feel and experience’. Nobody would like to stand next to stinking and ugly dressed individual. So, if someone wants to enter into the world of sophisticated people then now you know what needs to be done. However, this sophistication requires investment, and I would again like to come back to my initial point. When people do ugly job for free then they look and perceived ugly, which ultimately translate into long term rigid perception which is sometime tough to change. So, my questions would be, where would you like to focus? Changing people perception or your own life…? I would prefer my own life which also includes the people matters to me.
‘Don't ever let anyone make you feel like you don't deserve what you want.’
Let’s take another quote delivered by Heath Ledger in a movie. In India millions of people are delivering essential services almost free because of which neither their able to provide good service nor they are getting deemed respect. And as I mentioned earlier, quality sanitation service is a big unmet need especially in metro cities. Our corrupt government structures cannot fulfill this requirement, hence, private players should come forward and solve this issue. Initially it would require big investment however this can create huge turnaround in service quality and people perception. I won’t mind cleaning streets in a million dolor sanitation truck with a reasonable pay check. Similar stands true to other sanitation related services if done with the help of automatic machines. I have seen in western countries where people working in sanitation service are treated with huge respect because other understand the value of their services and associated costs (in the form of taxes). Similarly, the same section in India deserve the respect and good remuneration in return of their services.
In conclusion, Indian oppressed population (aka Dalit) should not fight against the people perception, it will end by its own. They rather should focus on improvement in their quality of life, if they can fix this than 90% of problem is solved. Dr. Ambedkar has also emphasized this point multiple time and now you know why he used to wear those western suits, those were the symbol of his sophistication. I don’t see any problem in profession type, however, we can improve the way it needs to be done. We need to focus on the way service being delivered. Incorporation of new technology and equipment can change the world of oppressed class, however, this will require government support because this change will require major investment. The moment we improve the quality of life of oppressed it will diminish the interaction barriers and the more people will interact the more thy will start knowing about each other, which will eventually will eradicate the caste discrimination in the Indian society. The moment we turn our weakness to strength the world bound to change its perception, because it’s accustomed to respect strong not the weak.
